PLINTH in association with the Felabration
October 14, 2016

19 years after his death, Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti, better known as Fela Kuti, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, or simply Fela! remains; to be Nigeria’s most recognized musician. With lyrics packed with defiance, aggression, passion, and outspokenness, Fela fought battles many could not as he tackled issues of corruption, injustice, and freedom. Kuti’s fight wasn’t one solely aimed at the government but also fellow Africans as he preached for peace among Africans; encouraged the practice of traditional African spirituality, and Pan Africanism. His work speaks volumes serving as a soundtrack to those who say “Hell no!” to global complacency, conformity, social, and political abuse. Even after his passing, his music finds itself fitting to everyday current events affecting the world. Fela was a multi instrumentalist, musician, and composer, pioneer of the Afrobeat music genre, human rights activist, and political maverick but moreover he was the spirit of Africa. Though he is not with us physically—he is with us spiritually. Leaving behind an extensive body of work, his family continues to carry his legacy with an annual event entitled “Felabration”. Felabration is an annual music festival conceived in 1998 by Yeni Anikulapo Kuti in memory and celebration of her father Fela Kuti. The one weeklong event is held annually at the New Afrika Shrine, located in Lagos, Nigeria. Attracting visitors from different countries the New Afrika Shrine is considered an official tourist destination by the Lagos State Government. With the blessings of the Fela Anikulapo Kuti estate October 14 is Felabration. Everybody say “Yeah, Yeah!”
