What is your name?
Let's go with Samadidas. A lot of people know me as that.
Tell us a bit about yourself/background
I'm Nigerian, born and raised. Came to the United States when I was 19. I'm Yoruba but not a demon o. So you get an idea how important food is to us Yoruba people.
When did you start doing this (art/music/production/design etc)?
I grew up being in the kitchen as most kids did. You know trying to help out, tasting everything, acting like I was in a cooking show. About 4 years ago, I got a second job as a dishwasher and a few months after I was making salads, about 4 months after I was working the line. Still climbing up the ladder.
How was the reaction/feedback from those around you (family/friends)?
Well you know as a Nigerian, it's not the typical route. Quite challenging because as cultured as we are, we don't branch out too much. So when one person does break out there's usually a lot of scrutiny. I've also gotten great feedback from people I've cooked for and that's what matters.
What inspires your art?
Knowing there's room for improvement and the vast knowledge of food out there from different cultures on this planet. There is more inspiration out there and you never know where it'll come from. You just have to reach out to the endless possibilities and see what your hands latch onto and go with it.
What is your favorite piece and why?
Pasta... Pasta rules. You can just play around with pasta and voila, you've come up with something Amazing. The creativity surrounding pasta dishes are endless.
Who would you like to work with /who inspires you/ which artist do you admire?
Hmmm-tough one... I have to go with Anthony Bourdain. I mean he's practically a Demigod amongst us.
Slow and Steady. Won't discuss too much on that.
What advice do you have for anybody out there who wants to be an artist like you?
Whatever you want to do. Do it well, don't look back and don't second guess yourself. Friends and family will have their input or won't be proud. It's your vision and it's your life. Make it count. Be the best at whatever you do. It's not always about the Money, it's about being HAPPY.
