Artist Spotlight: Black Mike
What is your name?
I go by Black Mike Da Don but a lot of people call me Black Mike for short.
Tell us a bit about yourself/background
I grew up in Brooklyn New York lived there all my life. I always was in love with music. Since like the third grade I’ve been rapping. I loved to rhyme and was good at it. I grew up in an African household with Nigerian parents
When did you start doing this (art/music/production/design etc.)?
I started officially taking music serious like last year August when I dropped my first track “know no better”. Its on my new mixtape “Take one” I just released on spinrilla yall should check that out too.
How was the reaction/feedback from those around you (family/friends)?
When I released the track everybody was like “ DAMN this kid is nice”. So a lot of encouragement came with that. Everybody wanted me to take it more serious and drop more music.
What inspires your art?
My inspiration honestly comes from boredom. When I get bored I just sit down and listen to MAD beats and try to come up with some heat. So I’m not gonna lie boredom is my inspiration.
What is your favorite piece and why?
This is a tough one. But I would have to go with my song Lifestyle (64 bars). It has that melody and flow to it that everyone likes.
Who would you like to work with /who inspires you/ which artist do you admire?
Ill tell you my top 5 right now. Future, jay z, Young Thug, The migos and drake. I like a lot of New york music too but I really listen to the Atlanta artist a lot
My future plan is to get the best out of this music thing. Do a lot of great things with it and then use my good to help other people reach their goals. Also to get into other ventures beside music.
What advice do you have for anybody out there who wants to be an artist like you?
I'll say to any one out there looking to be an artist. The number one thing is never give and never let anyone tell you no or let you believe you cant do it. You should always go with what you feel is right because a lot of people are gonna have their opinions but at the end of the day it how u feel is what really matters.
